FAQ

When is the best time to visit Savoie and Haute-Savoie?

You can visit Savoie and Haute-Savoie all year round! The best time to visit will depend on the sites and activities you wish to discover. Winter sports enthusiasts will prefer the period from December to March, while lovers of swimming and water sports on Lake Annecy or Lake Geneva will prefer the summer season (July/August), while cultural and landscape enthusiasts will explore our region in spring, when temperatures are mild, or in autumn, when the forests are decked out in their autumn colors.

Each season offers a different landscape, highlighting the richness and diversity of this Alpine region.

What are the main tourist attractions in Savoie and Haute-Savoie?

The region boasts a large number of must-see sites, but here are just a few of our favorites:

- Nature and landscapes: the Mont-Blanc tramway ride up from Saint Gervais, the Aiguille du Midi for an exceptional 360° view of Mont-Blanc and the surrounding mountains, Lake Annecy, renowned for the purest waters in Europe, the Cirque de Sixt Fer à Cheval classified as a Grand Site de France.

- Villages and heritage: Yvoire, classified as one of France's most beautiful villages, Chanaz, the little Savoyard Venice renowned for its crafts, Chamonix, a legendary mountaineering resort at the foot of Mont-Blanc, Annecy and its old town of canals and colorful facades.

- Cultural and gastronomic activities: the impressive Beaufort ripening cellars, the majestic Hautecombe Abbey on the shores of Lac du Bourget, the Savoy Wine Route from Jongieux to Chignin via Montmélian, the Paccard bell foundry in Sevrier.

What local culinary specialities are a must?

While you're here, don't forget to try our famous cheese dishes, such as tartiflette with reblochon, fondue savoyarde, raclette or berthoud, a speciality made from Abondance. We also recommend savoring a dish of diots (Savoyard sausage generally cooked in white wine) accompanied by crozets (small square pasta), farcement (a sweet-savory preparation made from grated potatoes, bacon and prunes) or potato fritters at a mountain inn. Gourmets can round off their meal with a delicious Gâteau de Savoie, a soft blueberry tart and a touch of génépi (traditional alcohol made from alpine plants).

Which typical villages can you visit to discover Savoie's heritage?

You can discover all the charm and authenticity of Savoy by visiting Yvoire, a medieval village classified as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages. If you're heading for the mountain resorts, don't miss Samoëns, an authentic village renowned for its stone masons, La Clusaz, cradle of heritage and agripastoralism, Megève, whose charm can be seen in its typical chalets, or Le Grand-Bornand, known for its Savoyard atmosphere at the foot of the majestic Aravis mountain range.

In Savoie, we recommend Beaufort for its authentic atmosphere and its cheese cooperative, Conflans the medieval town on the heights of Albertville, Bonneval-su-Arc classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, and Val d'Isère with its typical houses and timeless charm.
